The History
The MacCallum House, built in 1882 by William Kelley, was a wedding gift to his daughter Daisy MacCallum. At 20 years old, Daisy married Alexander MacCallum, her father's bookkeeper, and together they built a life in Mendocino, including their family home, now the MacCallum House.
Throughout her life, Daisy was well-educated, loved travel, and was deeply interested in horticulture, planting thousands of roses around her home. She moved the house to its current location after the 1906 earthquake and hosted an array of artists and intellectuals in her social circle. She continued to garden, often with a cane or rake, until her passing at 94 in 1953. Her legacy and roses live on at the MacCallum House, where her spirit of adventure and resilience remains.
Location
The location of this inn couldn’t be any more perfect. Mendocino Village is such a quintessential town that has a shop for everything. There’s music stores, ice cream parlors, a local market, craft shops, and all sorts of cafes – and MacCallum House is right there in the middle of it.
Want to see the beach? It’s a block away. Want to catch a show at the local theater? It’s close by as well. You could easily spend a week here and be perfectly content without ever having to move your vehicle.
Rooms
Surrounded by lush gardens and expansive lawns, the main property has nineteen rooms as well as the acclaimed restaurant and bar. The Inn also includes MacCallum Suites, a luxury mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Jedediah Smith, a two-bedroom, one bath newly-remodeled vacation rental - so 29 rooms in total.
We stayed in one of the rooms in the Barn (# 15) and it was absolutely perfect. Across the lawn from the main house and behind the privacy gate, you’ll find a private hot tub and patio area. Once you enter the room, you’re greeted with a beautiful space complete with king size bed, couch, gas fireplace, and immaculate bathroom – complete with in-house made soap.
Dining on Property
The renowned MacCallum House Restaurant, located on the main property, serves local, seasonal, organic Northern California cuisine created by executive chef Alan Kantor.
All rooms include a gourmet breakfast – and this was no continental breakfast. We opted to sit inside for breakfast as there was still a bit of chill in the air in the mornings. On the menu, there were choices like the Mac benedict, cornmeal pancakes, coconut chia parfait, and eggs with potatoes and breakfast meat of your choice. We loved sitting by the window and enjoying our coffee with a morning view of the flowers outside.
Dinner on property was out of this world delicious. My husband got the roasted maitake and I opted for the painted hills filet mignon. They also have other items on the list like duck confit tacos, caramelized day boat scallops, and fried chicken with watermelon salad and jalapeno cornbread.
Absolutely everything we got was delicious, but of course, we had to save room for dessert. MacCallum House makes their own ice creams in house, so my husband had the affogato and I opted for the praline cookie taco with mint ice cream. It was heavenly!
The best part was sitting outside on the porch for dinner. It was such a beautiful way to cap off an amazing trip to Mendocino and watching the sunset over the trees definitely added a bit of romance as well.
